Between the late 18th and early 19th centuries, hundreds of ships were built in Duxbury, Massachusetts, making it home to many shipbuilding and maritime families, including dozens of master mariners and their wives. While much is known about the major male figures from this period in Duxbury’s history, very little has been said of the women, especially those who made sea voyages of their own. Join Archivist and Historian Carolyn Ravenscroft to learn about a new project to uncover the identities and stories of Duxbury women who sailed from 1809-1890. Using the collections at the Drew Archival Library of the Duxbury Rural and Historical Society as well as vital records, census records, and various secondary sources, Ravenscroft has found the stories of 33 women (to date)—many from Duxbury’s maritime families.
