New York and London in the Gilded Age
Perhaps no single person defines the Gilded Age more than Edith Wharton, the aristocratic American novelist who realistically captured this privileged late 19th-century world.
For this special virtual presentation of our annual DiCamillo Rendezvous, we will look at the Gilded Age in America and England through Edith’s perceptive lens. Historian Carl Raymond will guide us through Edith Wharton’s New York, after which Curt DiCamillo will take us on a tour of Gilded Age England, where Edith’s influence was keenly felt.
The story of the collapse of an old world and the birth of a new one is a tale of money, power, jealousy, grand houses, great art collections, and a clash of cultures.
Join us for this richly illustrated historic romp through one of history’s most intriguing epochs.

DiCamillo Travel & Curator of Special Collections, American Ancestors and New England Historic Genealogical Society
Curt DiCamillo, internationally recognized authority on English country houses and the decorative arts, joined NEHGS in February 2016 as our first Curator of Special Collections. A longtime member of NEHGS, Curt has led highly successful heritage tours to England and Scotland, lectured extensively in the United States and abroad, and taught classes on British culture and art at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston.
Carl Raymond
Carl Raymond is a writer, lecturer, and culinary and social historian. He has lectured nationally as well as in Europe on various aspects of culinary history for group including the Royal Oak Foundation, the English-Speaking Union and the Metropolitan Opera Guild. He was a contributing writer on SAVORING GOTHAM: A Food Lover’s Companion to New York City (Oxford University Press). He specializes in the period of America’s Gilded Age and in the work and life of Edith Wharton. Carl is also a licensed New York City tour guide and leads specialized history-based tours of the city.
