For over 20 years, Ronald Lee Fleming, a lauded urban planner, place maker, and historic preservationist has applied his talents and resources toward revitalizing Bellevue House and its grounds—now the site of 12 gardens. Mr. Fleming will lead us on a special tour of his narrative gardens, each of them named for a “story of his life, his family, and his own history.” Both whimsical and extravagant follies have been crafted to set off the beauty of the landscape and impart a sense of surprise and discovery. Travels to Japan and Europe have also inspired Fleming’s designs. Motifs from Het Loo in Holland, Hever Castle, Villa Lante, David Hick’s The Grove in England, and beyond have been re-imagined in various locations in the landscape.

Copies of his award-winning book The Adventures of a Narrative Gardener: Creating a Landscape of Memory will be available for sale and signing in Fleming’s library, a special retreat and seldom open to visitors. This space includes an underground grotto with a cascade flowing from the exterior garden into a stone lined pool encrusted with 37 varieties of shells from around the world.
