On Demand: Classical Architecture & Decorative Arts in British Houses, Part I

Presented by Curt DiCamillo

Upon purchase, you will receive an email with a link to the recording and program materials. You will also be able to access this page under “My Account”> “Digital Content.”

The art and architecture of the ancient classical world was reborn in the 18th century with the emergence in England and France of the Neoclassical style. Known to contemporaries as “the antique manner,” this new style was inspired by the art and design of classical Greece and Rome, which was being dramatically revealed by the archeological discoveries being made at Herculaneum and Pompeii.

Guided by the remains of the classical past, Neoclassical artists, architects, and designers sought to create a modern, eternally valid “true style” that could be expressed across all areas of the visual arts. Perhaps nowhere was this new vision of the classical world more enthusiastically embraced than in Britain, where buildings of all sorts, but most especially country houses, were erected in the newly fashionable style. In this first of a two-part webinar Curt DiCamillo will take us on a grand tour of Britain’s most glorious classical style country houses and their luscious interiors.
